Breathe | Play | Laugh : A day of restorative play for Global Majority care givers

What & Who? Is part of Afri-Co-Lab’s Black2Hastings strand of work and programming for Global Majority folks. It is a creative away day for Global Majority folks who hold space* for others- whether in their professional life; as an artist, creative, an organiser, activist, therapist, carer, facilitator etc or in their personal life. It is an act of community care for folks living or working locally in Hastings & Rother & East Sussex. How? We use restorative practices based in creativity & play to make space for collective care within our community. We spend the day together with facilitators holding sessions where participants are invited to move their bodies, open their imaginations to find relief and lightness in our minds and hearts. This is an invitation to put something back in your pot. We’ll do the planning, holding, organizing all you need to do is book and we will take care of the rest. There will be drinks and snacks available throughout the session and a full lunch in the middle of the day. There are no expectations, no specific outcomes, no experience or practices needed – the sessions are gentle – so just a willingness to explore in an environment intentionally held* for you. Why? It’s been a tough time for everyone for many different reasons, however we have seen and particularly felt the intersectional repercussions of this for Global Majority communities. As parts of our wider Global Majority community suffer in the current climate, more is called upon Global Majority space holders and activists to support these communities in these harsh times. We at Afri-Co-Lab have developed this day in response to this additional emotional and racialized labour and in response to the conversations we have been having within our communities about the need for rest. Support…Get involved

Experience Sensory Rest

How are you? And how have you engaged your senses lately?  I’m knackered but happy. I feel immense satisfaction from exhibiting in two fantastic group shows this month: Radiant at Copeland Gallery, and A Space for Resistance and Renewal (ASFRAR) for Vital Signs at Science Gallery, which continues to 17 May 2025.   Holding space for you to rest in community always thrills me. As a collector friend of mine said recently:   “[It’s] a gift to oneself to lie down and let everything go – to pause.”  As with all my installations, ASFRAR is incomplete without your presence and reflections and I invite you to come and reset your senses. Vital Signs is a beautifully sensitive exhibition that holds space for grief, wonder and inspiration. The woody scent of the bark cloth and the way the light filters through banana fibres is quite magical and inspires meditation.   Reflecting on my own journey, I’m currently three years into burnout recovery, and still trying to balance work that feeds my soul and belly.   The past  Earlier this year, I was living in unsafe, uninsulated, concrete council housing, which negatively impacted my health. Living in state-sanctioned dysfunction fuelled my collaboration on ‘Cultivating Rhythms of Care’, to promote a return to coherence informed by cycles in nature and menstruating bodies.   The present  As I write (safe, warm and cancelling plans left, right and centre), I can reflect that I’ve been making home spaces where I can be honest that I’m still in burn out recovery and need support. My installations are sites for research too because the questions that arise when you’re invited to rest in public are quite revelatory.  The future   In 2025, I’m looking forward to sharing how my Mindful African workshops and programmes can support you to feel confident and calm in the workplace. Could you help me? If you’re up for a chat or could connect me to a team leader with budget and a heart, let me know!  Email me for a chat

Kiganda Dancers (remixed)

“I can “hear” this piece and I am left waiting for the figures to leap off the page and continue in their dance. I admire the intricacy required of hand-cut work and the addition of the batik fabrication. Kawooya has created such a fluidity with their figures which hone in on the sense of familiarity and engagement I believe was intended.” Kel Cadet-Lyons of Shop R-KI-Tekt  I have two fine art prints available that I would love to rehome.  COLLECT THE KIGANDA DANCERS REMIXED
