Access Needs

Access needs

I’m Birungi, a wellbeing researcher, creative facilitator, and artist living with PTSD and recovering from burnout.

Mental health needs

I have PTSD, in part due to repeated experiences of violence related to my class, gender, race, and disability.

Researching my condition and supporting my own and community wellbeing forms the foundation of my expertise and informs my workshops.

I require respect and care in all interactions. My lived experiences are valuable and should be recognised. Please engage with me with professionalism, integrity, and kindness.

Communication styles & agreements

I thrive with clear, honest, and direct communication. I appreciate transparency, integrity, and follow-through, and value environments where we can be candid and build trust without unnecessary formality or double-speak.

If your organisation lacks representation of people with strategically undervalued characteristics and a long-term commitment to equity, I will assume that DEI is not a core priority. This is not a judgement, but necessary context for how I engage with your team.

Unless explicitly agreed, my engagement with you is focused on mindfulness and wellbeing, not DEI initiatives or publicity. My work must be represented accurately both internally and externally.

Class needs (payment & fees)

As a working-class creative, I require a fee payment for designing and delivering bespoke workshops or programmes.

  • A 50% deposit is due within one week of signing the contract

  • The remaining 50% is due on the day of workshop or programme completion

  • Payment terms are within 7 days of invoicing, unless otherwise agreed.

Physical & sensory needs

Due to the physical demands of my work and materials, I require taxis for travel to workshop venues. The materials I use, such as bamboo and banana fibres, are cumbersome and not suitable to be carried on the Underground.

I require soft lighting and an environment free from loud or unexpected noises, with the ability to play music to support my wellbeing.

My workshops are timed to suit my needs, typically lasting 2–3 hours to ensure an optimal experience for both myself and participants.

Final notes

These access needs ensure that I can deliver my best work, while maintaining my wellbeing. I appreciate those who respect and honour these requirements. Thank you for your care and consideration.
