have rights—that we respect and uphold their rights.”
Wellbeing Programme
Artist presentation and Q&A – I shared my wellbeing practices and journey to improving my self-worth through art expression and community care. I presented my Self Portraiture series and how depression and anxiety in my teenage years led me to self discovery and healing.
Meditation - To relax and prime their imagination.
Wellbeing writing exercise – I shared a worksheet with prompts to help the young people express how they take care of themselves, family and friends and their wider community.
Individual shield making – Using shield designs, banana fibre (thin sheets of wood) and African textiles from East Africa the young people made individual shields and wrote their wellbeing commitments in gold.
Group shield making – Working together in groups of 6-8 the young people collaborated on designing a larger shield, in doing so practiced active listening, sharing space and respectful teamwork.
Reflection and close – An important opportunity to hear from the young people on the impact of our creative making together.
Testimonials
“Thank you to National Saturday Club and Birungi (and also Magnus!) for visiting us today for Birungi’s Wellbeing Warriors Masterclass, in which we made shields using banana tree fibres and African print fabrics, and even enjoyed a moment of meditation. We really enjoyed our day!”
“The way that you shared your personal journey to the creation of the shields was very well received by Club members and Club tutors. Thank you for taking the time to bring your whole self to the Masterclass it will stay with everyone involved I have no doubt.”
