I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where
you’re going.

Film, Dance & Art Programme

Kiganda dance film screening – supported by Portico Library, I co-produced and screened a film ‘Learn about Kiganda Dance by Aminah Namakula’ in Greenwich, a borough with a significant Ugandan community, to archive and share Kiganda dance history.

Dance workshop – I recruited Judith Palmer MBE to dissect the principles of Baksimba dance and teach an accompanying song in Luganda. She was supported on the drums by Kauma Arts founder, Mercy Nabirye, and Shamillah, daughter of renowned African dance instructor Aminah Namakula.

Art workshop – I encouraged participants to make collage artworks inspired by images of the Kiganda dancers to memorialise the experience of dancing together.

It felt so good to be in my body, dancing with family and other families who haven’t danced to
drums in forever. We really needed this!
