I am beyond thrilled to share that I am the first Njabala Foundation artist in residence supported by the Arts Council England! Based in Kampala, Uganda for 5 months, I'll explore natural fibres - #lubugo (bark cloth), #ensansa (palm leaves), #ebyaayi (banana tree fibres) and learn #weaving and #basketry techniques. It'll be the first time in my life that I can solely focus on my art, get back to nature, learn and reinterpret my culture. In March 2023, I'll have a new body of work to exhibit with Njabala Foundation alongside artists Pepita Biraaro and Mabel Akeu.
This residency is a dream come true.
I am so grateful to Njabala Foundation founder, Martha Kazungu for supporting me to design this residency and connecting to me phenomenal artist mentors - Aminah Namakula, Cate Nakayiza, Sheila Nakitende, Nancy Nangobi and Dr Sarah Nakisanze. And thank you Afropocene for inviting me into my first studio space.
