Can you rest? is part of the Annual Njabala Foundation Exhibition "Holding Space" at Makerere Art Gallery until 8 April 2023.
Open Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm.
The installation of a banana and palm woven mat, bark cloth sheet, banana fibre headrest and citronella for sensory pleasure and protection is an invitation to all who have ever identified as a woman to rest.
Succumbing to rest and accepting support helped me start to deprogramming myself of internalised capitalism in 2021. At the time, I convinced myself to keep working through illness (depression and anxiety) and further dehumanised myself to appear as valuable. I've done this to myself before. This is internalised ableism.
I struggle with my self worth everyday. I need to trust, that I am not my productive output. Laying down, engaging my senses with music, movement and scents helps me to claw back my humanity. This is an ongoing process. Can we help each to be more human?
Thank you Njabala Foundation for centering rest, care and labour.
Thank you to 32° East Ugandan Arts Trust, Arts Council England, Moleskine Foundation, Akka Project, Linda Umutesi and FG Foundation.
