Liberation, what Black dance innovators "Hiplet Ballerinas" teach me

Birungi Kawooya June 6, 2024

I don't think I ever wanted to be a ballerina, but as a young girl, I drew them alot which makes me feel I wanted to be like them. Elegant. Graceful. The epitome of femininity.

Black dancers in European dance styles like ballet are often told they don't belong. They're too dark. To muscular. Too Black. @hipletballerinas @cmdc_school are places of resistance and ingenuity. There is something thrilling to watch Black dancers take up space and create new art forms. Black dancers show me how to imagine and this is why I'm sharing my art with you today.
