Descendents | Benin Bronzes Past, Present and Future youth art workshops

I had the enormous privilege of leading art workshops for over 20 brilliant young minds as part of the Descendants half term week of culture which also included dancing and history! The incredible Benjamin and Margaret took the kids to The British Museum and they got to see priceless artefacts stolen from West Africa by British Army imperialists. Swipe for an update on their repatriation.

PAST

They learned about the Kingdom of Benin (now Nigeria) and honored the Oba's (King) and Oba's Mothers by making their own Benin Bronzes to take home and treasure.

PRESENT

The children loved making their own self-portraits and some of them made crowns so they saw themselves as regal. Raising the self esteem of children makes my heart sing!

FUTURE

In our online session, I encouraged the children to dream outloud and share what they wanted to be. I will never forget that A wanted to be a pilot so A drew an airplane. D wanted to be a popstar and a nurse and sketched a stylish outfit and stethoscope. F wants to be an artist and K wanted to become an MP. They were thrilled to meet the Mayor of Ealing and see their futures 🥰🥰🥰

IMAGINE

We all need to imagine a brighter future, share our hopes and dreams and commit to ourselves to taking care of each other.

What did you want to be when you were young?
